Replacing a shower arm is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project that can be completed in just a few minutes.

In this guide, we’ll provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to replace a shower arm. We’ll also answer a few common questions about the replacement process.

Step 1: Turn off The Water Line

The first step is to shut off the water supply. This should be done before beginning any work to replace the shower arm.

The water main is usually found in the basement or crawl space. Once you have located it, turn the knob to the right to shut it off.

Step 2: Remove The Old Shower Arm

Now that the water is off, you can remove the old shower arm. We recommend using a wrench to loosen the shower arm from the shower pipe. You’ll want to turn the shower arm counterclockwise.

Once the shower arm is disconnected, carefully pull it straight out so it doesn’t damage any surrounding tile.

Step 3: Align The Shower Arm

Some shower arms may look similar from both ends. Be sure that you know which one will connect to the shower pipe and which will connect to the showerhead.

Step 4: Install The New Shower Arm

Before installing the new shower arm, wrap the tread with Teflon (plumbers tape) in a clockwise direction one or two times. This will help to create a watertight seal.

Now, take the shower arm and screw it into the shower pipe in a clockwise direction until it’s tight. Loosely set the flange on the shower arm.

Step 5: Attach The Showerhead

Once the shower arm has been installed, you can then attach the showerhead. Again, be sure to use Teflon tape on the threads before screwing the shower head onto the shower arm to prevent any leaks.

Tighten the showerhead with your hand until it’s snug. You don’t want to over-tighten it as this could damage the shower arm or showerhead.

Step 6: Turn On The Water Supply

Now that the new shower arm and showerhead are installed, you can turn on the water supply. Head back to the water main and turn the knob to the left to turn it on. As the water flows through the shower arm, check for any leaks. If there are no leaks, you can mount the flange against the shower wall.
